A lot of students ask me about special accommodations for the TOEFL test—but did you know there are several personal items you can bring to the test center without prior approval?
That’s right! ETS and Prometric (the folks who run the TOEFL test) have a list of pre-approved personal items ✅ that are allowed in the test room. I’ve attached the full list below for your convenience, but I want to highlight one of the most underrated game-changers:
Foam earplugs (with no strings attached). 🎧
These are especially helpful during the Listening section 🗣️, where noise and distractions can affect your concentration. But here’s the thing—don’t forget to use them during the other sections, too!
One of my students shared a story that made me laugh—but also taught a great lesson. He brought his earplugs and used them during Listening. He focused deeply and scored really well. But then… he took them out and forgot to put them back in during Writing. ✍️ Someone next to him was whispering, and he got completely distracted.
The takeaway? Yes, bring your earplugs. But also, remember to use them throughout the whole test! ✅
Test day is stressful 😬. It’s easy to forget the small things. That’s why I always say: your first TOEFL test isn’t just a test—it’s part of your education. You’re learning what to expect, what to bring, and how to manage your focus.
And when you share your stories with me, it helps me support other students who are walking the same path. We’re all in this together.
I hope this tip helps you feel a little more prepared.
Happy TOEFL studying—and don’t forget your earplugs! 🎧💪✨
